Ever heard of Techlead? The guy that doesn’t spare a video without mentioning that he’s a millionaire?
He’s a self-made millionaire, app creator, online course instructor, and an Ex-Facebook software engineer and Ex-Google techlead.
While he started his Youtube channel to share his experience as a programmer, the channel has turned out to be a lifestyle channel.
He shares his family matters (divorce) on his Youtube channel.
But behind everything, you cannot miss his funny titles that have “as a millionaire” as a suffix.
Wondering who the Techlead is, his wife, net worth, and how he started? I did detailed research to find out everything about the Techlead.
I hope you have a great read!
Who is the Techlead? – Patrick Shyu
His real name is Patrick Shyu. He’s a genius programmer who taught himself programming and has created apps that have earned him millions of dollars.
He’s the Ex-Google tech lead, Ex-Facebook software engineer, and Ex-husband (a title he has been using lots of times).
Patrick Shyu spent most of his time in the United States. He officially started his career in 2001 where he began his BSC program at the University of California, Berkeley.
He finished his program in 2005. Before the end of his BS program, he did a computer science program at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, which lasted one year.
Upon graduating in 2005, he went for his Master of Science in computer science and engineering at the University of California San Diego.
Although little is known about Shyu’s early life, Patrick Shyu worked in computer graphics.
What’s worth mentioning is that he worked as an intern at Microsoft in 2006 for four months.
He also interned in PixelActive3D during that same year, 2006, for four months too.
From there onward, Patrick got into app development.
Making over a Million Dollar from Apps
Patrick started creating apps in 2008, and this was when the app market was still young. His very first apps were a series game, World of Blood.
During that time, the web game became so popular and reached over 1.5 million users on social networks like Twitter, Facebook, etc.
This was his very first set of game apps and definitely earned something worthwhile. But as it is in the app market, apps become quickly outdated when the buzz around them dies.
The World of Blood was active for over a year before it started seeing a decline in users.
In 2007, Patrick Shyu created a social network that features games, a marketplace, chats, etc.
This was also a success. It had over 3.5 million users. It was active from 2007 to 2014. This also contributed to him becoming financially stable in his 20s.
Panolapse360 is another software created by the Techlead (Shyu) in 2013. It is a popular timelapse software for perspective-correct simulated motion (I had to check this out as I didn’t know what it was).
In 2014 was when Patrick started hitting it big with his mobile apps. As Patrick said in one of his videos, tapping into an early trend is one of the easiest and best ways to become rich.
He got into iOS apps development in 2014 when it was still new, and lots of people were still on the Android app store.
In 2014, Patrick launched 9 iOS apps with over 100K downloads under the brand name, Avalancia.
Thanks to these apps, Techlead became a millionaire over time.
In an interview with Graham Stephan, Patrick Shyu revealed three of his apps were responsible for his million-dollar net worth at 25.
Before 25 or hitting a million-dollar from his apps, Shyu was already living a digital nomad lifestyle.
It is at this point that he got accepted into Google as a software developer after several applications.
Ex-Google and Ex-Facebook Developer
While developing apps, Shyu was consistently applying for his dream job as a software engineer at Google.
Coincidentally, it was at this point his income from apps started declining. That’s the nature of the app industry.
It isn’t a consistent business. You need to keep creating more apps and marketing them properly to make consistent income.
According to Patrick Shyu, the average lifespan of his app profitability is a year.
The Techlead, as he loves to call himself, worked at Google for three years and eight months, as stated on his Linkedin page.
After leaving Google, he got a job at Facebook as a software engineer. He worked with Facebook for a year and three months.
At both tech companies, he rose to the position of a team leader, which is referred to as Tech Lead.
It is not an actual position you apply to get as Shyu mentioned in one of his videos (sorry, I can’t remember the URL).
As a tech lead, you’re the representative of your team. Quite similar to the typical team leader we are familiar with.
According to him, Facebook fired him for having a Youtube channel against its staff policy.
It was during this period, he started having some family crisis.
Techlead Wife
Heck, you must have seen the Tech lead video(s) about his divorce.
Shyu doesn’t restrain from sharing personal and family problems on his youtube channel as a free-spirited guy.
In one of his videos, Shyu revealed how his financial success caused friction in his relationship.
According to him, money led to the gradual degrading of his relationship with his wife,, which eventually led to divorce.
In that video episode, he discussed how small acts of kindness never mattered again to his wife.
A little about his wife is that she’s Japanese. The culture barrier was also one of the things that led to the divorce.
While we never would know what exactly happened in his marriage, it’s sad and unhealthy how the Tech Lead always blame his Ex-wife.
Having watched several of his videos, I feel like he’s instead a confused soul trying to survive the crisis all around him.
Well, what do we expect when the videos about his midlife crisis received more views than the regular content he publishes?
Since disclosing his divorce from his wife, Shyu has created multiple videos about his relationship and sharing relationship advice.
And these videos received lots of views. Some of his videos have over 2 million views.
Some of these videos are:
He also once shared a video about how it has been a while he saw his son. Yes, the Tech lead has a son. His wife went away with his son. He also once disclosed how his son is the victim of the divorce.
Luke Winkie did put this better in his article: The Hustle Guy Monetizing his Midlife Crisis.
What is Patrick Shyu Net Worth?
Patrick Shyu’s net worth is estimated to be $7 million. His net worth comes from his youtube ads revenue, courses, and crypto investments.
Techlead has four courses in active selling namely:

He also makes money from crypto in the following ways:

The Tech lead Youtube.
As a full-time YouTuber, Patrick Shyu runs one of the fastest-growing youtube channels.
In 2019 when I discovered his channel, he had about 500K subscribers but revisiting it now, he has about 1.1m subscribers.
The Tech Lead channel was created as a hub to share his experience as a programmer and the tech lead.
He also uses his channel to boost the sales of his courses which would be discussed later on.
And now, he has moved from being just a channel for his programming experience to a lifestyle channel where he shares the personal experience.
He also shares ways to make money online as that’s one of the popular types of content on his channel.
Before the Tech Lead channel, Shyu does ran a travel channel in the year 2005, a long time.
I managed to track this on his LinkedIn profile. The channel is no longer active. It goes by the name Blue Eden.

Life lessons from Patrick Shyu (The Tech Lead)
From his jokes in his videos, there are lots of lessons that I have learned by watching his videos.
Patrick Shyu is a determined and focused individual. Sometimes I wonder how he manages to write codes while at Google and Facebook and also create videos at the same time.
This is something I so much respect him for. Also, he has developed lots of apps also which was where he got his start as a millionaire.
Also, in a life where you can never please anyone, being free-spirited can be a wonderful attribute to have.
I so much love his free-spirited attribute and honesty when it comes to discussing his matters.
Although a lot of people dislike him for that, I do love him for being honest about his opinions and not painting something that isn’t.
While I do not agree with all his views, that’s bound to be, I do love and cherish his honesty.
Conclusion
Patrick Shyu (the Tech lead) is an awesome guy and his videos are worth watching as I catch lots of fun and learn a lot from his channel.
But at the same time, I wouldn’t turn a blind eye to the fact that he somehow is a typical example of someone who sacrificed his family life and relationship for financial and business success.
This also tells in his videos as he doesn’t waste an episode or interview without reminding you that he’s the techlead and also a millionaire.
Anyway, he’s a cool guy and someone I respect in the industry. He isn’t your regular Youtuber.
Have you watched any of the Tech lead videos? Have you taken any of his courses before? I would love to hear from you.

Hi Akinduyo, Patrick is Chinese-American, not Japanese-American. If you watched his video titled “Anti-Asian American Hate” that was posted about 10 months ago, Patrick had made reference to his family background/ethnicity. Also, Shyu/Hsu/Tsui is a relatively common Chinese surname.
Great summary, thanks for posting.
Akinduyo Eniola says
Hi Karaina,
Thanks for the correction. I just saw the video and I have corrected it.
And thanks for leaving a comment.
Do have a great weekend,
Eniola.

What’s going on with Techlead? He hasn’t posted any videos in weeks. Something seems very strange.
Eniola Akinduyo says
Hi Shawn, Techlead is fine. He is probably taking some time off. He should be back with new videos next week.
PS: Had an email chat with him yesterday.
